Abstract

Given that Japan has limited energy resources, more than 90% of the country's primary energy is derived from imported fossil fuels. Of the various measures to counter this import dependency under consideration, hydrogen is one of the most promising solutions. Under these circumstances, on December 26, 2017, the Japanese government decided the Basic Hydrogen Strategy, which shows future visions that Japan can achieve with an eye to 2050 and also serves as an action plan to accomplish the visions by 2030. This paper introduces the R&D projects being conducted by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) as a representative governmental agency in Japan, for accelerating the dissemination of hydrogen as a new energy choice in accordance with the above-mentioned strategy as well as the current market status in Japan.
