Abstract

Contrary to the expectations of modernization and developmentalist theorists, the historical experiences of Europe and North America have not been reproduced in the postcolonial societies of the Third World., The spread of capitalism has not been accompanied by the emergence of liberal democratic bourgeois states. Instead, the development of capitalism has resulted in the growth of military bureaucratic states.
