Abstract

The incidents covered in this article took place in an orthopaedic operating theatre. Similar incidents occurred twice within a couple of weeks while each patient was undergoing lower-limb surgery with a thigh tourniquet. Following surgery, these two patients noticed they had developed blisters around the area in which the tourniquet had been applied. This was suspected by the surgical team to be a tourniquet-associated chemical burn. The authors felt, with two patients having been affected, that they should look into possible reasons. Research on the effectiveness of several different tourniquet covers was undertaken to see which cover was the safest for patient use.
