Tourism management for Antarctica.

Abstract

This chapter examines relevant aspects of management systems that have arisen in other areas (South Georgia; Svalbard, Norway; and Glacier Bay, Alaska, USA) that share some of the features of Antarctica, and discusses whether these management measures might be applied to Antarctic tourism. It also highlights some limitations in managing Antarctic tourism under the Antarctic Treaty System and proposes appropriate solutions. It is suggested that management strategies based on the concepts of 'carrying capacity' and 'limits of acceptable change' are applicable to Antarctica, and so does multiple resource management planning. Proposals for landing site management planning and monitoring for change are discussed.
