Abstract
This chapter concerns an examination of the challenges and opportunities of tourism development in the Marshall Islands. Crucially, the chapter indicates how the islands have been influenced and determined by the burdensome legacy of nuclear colonization, hindering the development and advancement of tourism development. Nonetheless, the chapter takes an optimistic approach, despite past and ongoing challenges, including the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic to inbound tourism, particularly by focusing on the importance of tourism development opportunities and strategies. Therefore, attention is drawn to the importance of capacity building as a tourism development strategy, with special attention to issues of building tourism infrastructure and establishing public and private sector collaborations. Focus is then placed on marketing activities as a crucial tourism development strategy, notably the advancement and promotion of ‘high value, low impact’ and ecological-based tourism. The chapter highlights the importance of promoting a positive and resilient destination image for the Marshall Islands, particularly in light of the additional challenges concerning the COVID-19 pandemic.
