Abstract

The author considers the role of tourism in relation to trends in regional planning and development thinking in East Mediterranean countries. Case studies of regional planning and tourist development in Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, and Israel are presented. The author concludes that sustained success in the tourism industry depends on the adoption of a conservationist ethic, and that the preservation of natural environment and cultural heritage are vital in regional planning.
