Abstract

Changes in the political life, as well as accession into the European Union (EU), have had a large impact on tourism development and tourism research in Slovakia. Tourism development can be divided into a number of periods based on the focus and priorities of tourism policy. This chapter highlights three distinct periods in relation to tourism development, the period of socialism, the period of transition, and the period of the European Union membership. Evidence suggests that Slovakia has not achieved the number of incoming tourists and expenditures on domestic tourism as it did before 1989. The primary cause appears to be that tourism policy has supported destinations with highly developed tourism rather than those struggling to succeed in the post-Soviet era.
