Abstract

Although the growth of tourism in Bali has been welcomed by the central Indonesian government as a source of foreign exchange earnings and as a stimulating influence on the local economy, the planners there are concerned with the possible adverse effects of cultural disruption brought about by large influxes of foreign (Western) tourists. This paper details the attempts which have been made in Bali to achieve controlled social and economic modernization with reference to the development of the tourist industry.
