Abstract

A model for the restraining effect of second-phase inclusions on an advancing crack front in a brittle matrix is presented which incorporates a parameter characterizing the relative ease of cutting through or circumventing the second phase, compared with matrix cracking. The model predicts a rapid increase in toughness with volume fraction of the second phase at dilute concentrations, and a maximum toughness at intermediate volume fraction, in agreement with available experimental results.
