Abstract

This paper refers to a set of classic articles and books from the late 1970s and early 1980s, in which the principles of sensitivity and specificity, bayesian test analysis, and decision analysis are described. In the last 10 years, related articles on the theory and methods of diagnostic test assessment have appeared in many general medical, pathology, and radiology journals. Interest in codifying the approach to diagnostic test assessment has led to a consensus development process of the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards, culminating in a Provisional Guideline document on the assessment of clinical sensitivity and specificity of diagnostic tests. Still, articles on the evaluation of diagnostic procedures are rife with errors
