Abstract

Indoor air pollutant levels caused by the use of nonvented kerosene stoves as well as vented wood, coal or recycle oil heating sources are of increasing concern as the use of such heaters becomes more widespread. This is an initial study on monitoring total hydrocarbon (HC) pollutants from the use of nonvented kerosene heaters, with modeling calculations on the total hydrocarbon data to determine emission rates. Results for a radiant kerosene heater in three different rooms showed that concentrations of total hydrocarbon increased by 800 to 2100 ppb/v (expressed as methane) depending on room size and ventilation rate. Preliminary calculation of total hydrocarbon emission rates from a radiant kerosene heater yielded values around 1140 μg/min.
