Abstract
Incremental hourglass control formulations lead to erroneous results when problems associated with large and complicated deformations are considered. This fact is shown analytically by way of a simple example. Accordingly, a novel hourglass control method based on the total Lagrangian formulation is presented which avoids the detected problems. The formulation is physically based and no empirical factor has to be estimated. A closed form thereby has been developed for explicit finite element codes and 3D-hexahedral elements.
