Abstract

Twenty-one cases of hypopharyngeal and cervical esophageal cancer were treated with gastric transposition and pharyngolaryngoesophagectomy at Gunma Cancer Center, from 1976 to 1983. In most of the cases, serious surgical complications were not experienced and swallowing function recovered within 2 weeks after the surgery. Three year-survival rate was 57.1% (4 of 7 cases). Pathological examination of the specimens revealed that the primary lesion involved the cervical esophagus in most cases. This operative procedure is reliable and suitable for the radical treatment of extended hypopharyngeal and cervical esophageal cancer.
