Abstract

Twenty patients with carcinoma of the esophagus were treated with descending colon bypass and combined radiation and chemotherapy. The results obtained are described. In ten patients, total esophagectomy was also performed with a significant prolongation of life and well-being. The advantages as well as the disadvantages of using the descending colon for esophageal bypass are described. The merits of treating esophageal carcinoma in a sequence of stages, including use of the descending colon for bypass radiation therapy, and total esophagectomy are reviewed.
