Abstract

On the basis of Glauber's high-energy multiple-scattering theory, an approximate expression is obtained for the total cross sections of high-energy particles on atomic nuclei. This expression reproduces well the experimental data on the total cross section of proton-nucleus interaction in the multi-GeV energy range. Furthermore, it provides us with a criterion for the validity of the impulse approximation and the diffraction model for the treatment of high-energy collisions.
