Abstract

The neutron total cross section for $^{40}\mathrm{Ar}$ has been measured over the incident neutron energy range 0.007--50 MeV. R-matrix analysis of the cross section from 0.007 to 1.52 MeV provides resonance parameters which provide a complete description of the neutron scattering functions for the ${\mathit{s}}_{1/2}$, ${\mathit{p}}_{1/2}$, and ${\mathit{p}}_{3/2}$ scattering channels and less nearly complete scattering functions for the ${\mathit{d}}_{3/2}$ and ${\mathit{d}}_{5/2}$ channels. The back-shifted Fermi-gas model is used to model the level densities for s-, p-, and d-wave resonances.
