Abstract

Total communication is defined as it is utilized in the State of Arizona with developmentally disabled and mentally retarded clients. A brief history of the development of this technique population is given. The potential usefulness of total communication with developmentally disabled/mentally retarded persons is explored in terms of receptive and expressive language development and as an alternative to supplement other communication modalities. Future challenges in the use of total communication are reflected upon in the areas of computer systems, scientific study of the complexity of sign production, and language concept development. The need for individualized adaptations to meet client needs is emphasized.
