Abstract

Changing technology, with all its implications for product and process innovations, and the changes in the marketplace which result from technological advance are reflected in all areas of business and industry. Computer-aided information and material flow and modern means of communication are affecting not only the people involved in industry and the methods employed but also its organization, which is now in a state of evolutionary change. The integration of industrial logistics in the overall concept of computer-aided manufacturing is slowly but surely taking us in the direction of the factory of the future. The plans of “today” must take into account not only the emerging plans of “tomorrow” but also those of the more distant future, while still keeping a cautious eye on previous experience and on what is already feasible at present. This paper focuses on the following themes: 1. • New food for thought on the way to the factory of the future 2. • From the insular solution to the total automation system 3. • Synchronizing material and information flows 4. • The role of industrial logistics in the total CIM concept 5. • Development of open systems interconnections 6. • Introductory strategies and future perspectives.
