Abstract
Plasma acid-soluble total and free tryptophan concentrations were measured in twenty-six control women, in a group of twenty-four women with a depressive illness, in eleven patients after recovery, not on drugs, and in eleven recovered patients on prophylactic lithium. The group of depressive women had very significantly reduced plasma levels of free tryptophan, but their levels increased significantly after recovery, although not returning fully to normal. This increase in free tryptophan after recovery was not influenced by the administration of lithium. Total acid-soluble plasma-tryptophan was normal in depressive illness both before and after clinical recovery.
