Abstract
Experimental total electron scattering cross sections from Xe in the energy range300–5000 eV have been obtained with experimental errors of about 3%. Themethod was based on the measurement of the attenuation of a linear electronbeam through a Xe gas cell in combination with an electron spectroscopytechnique to analyse the energy of the transmitted electrons. Differentialand integral elastic cross sections have been calculated using a scatteringpotential method which includes relativistic effects. The consistency of ourtheoretical and experimental results is also discussed in the paper. Finally, analytical formulae depending on two parameters, namely the number oftarget electrons and the atomic polarizability, are given to reproduce theexperimental data for Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe in the energy range 500–10 000 eV.
