Abstract

The total AC loss in high T c superconductors carrying the AC transport current in the AC external magnetic field was measured in the transverse and the longitudinal magnetic fields. In parallel transverse magnetic field, the twisting of Bi-2223 tape with Ag-matrix showed a limited effect to reduce the total AC loss, while it is not effective in the perpendicular transverse magnetic field as well as the 45° transverse magnetic field. In the longitudinal magnetic field in a certain direction against the direction of the transport current, twisting increases the total AC loss. Numerical studies showed that there is the optimum twist pitch minimizing the total AC loss when the external magnetic field has both the transverse and the longitudinal components.
