Abstract
Torsional vibration measurements were performed on a diesel engine coupled to an induction dynamometer. The motivation for this work wasan unexpected failure of a flexible coupling between the engine and dynamometer. Excessive torsional vibration is not easily observed; quite often, little warning is give before coupling failure. The objective of this testing was to confirm that the likely cause of the coupling failure was torsional vibration and to demonstrate the feasibility of a new, dual-laser technique for measuring torsional vibration.
