Abstract

Steel beam-columns of I-shaped cross section commonly collapse in a flexural-torsional mode. The St. Venant torsional rigidity is therefore one of the relevant section properties in analysis. As some regions may be strained beyond the elastic limit before collapse occurs, it is necessary to estimate the effective rigidity, GK, of a partially yielded cross section.
