Abstract
The stability criteria for an infinitesimally extended finitely twisted cylindrical rod resting upon a rigid frictionless plane inclined with respect to a gravity field are determined. It is found that the initial position, in which the centerline of the rod is straight, is one of classically stable equilibrium but that instabilities may develop for sufficiently large displacements from that configuration. Thus buckling may occur if imperfections of the rod or other extraneous displacements of sufficient magnitude are present.
