Abstract

An acoustic wave sensor/resonator (10) utilizes a torsional wave trapped in an acoustic wave cavity (16) that is formed in a noncylindrical substrate (18). An acoustic wave transducer (12) is positioned adjacent the acoustic wave cavity (16) off of the centerline (15) of the cavity (16) and in a plane parallel to a planar surface of the acoustic wave cavity (16) to generate the torsional wave. The acoustic wave transducer (12) can be a piezoelectric transducer (13) or an electromagnetic transducer. Further, the torsional wave can be generated by a single transducer (12) or multiple transducers (12, 12’).
