Abstract
Abstract In this chapter, we discuss the basic notions of topological transformation groups, such as topological groups, fixed point sets, orbits, orbit spaces, orbit types, isotropy groups, and induced transformation groups. The discussion takes place from the point of view of general topology. These ideas display their real power in the study of smooth transformation groups on manifolds, which we shall deal with later.
