Abstract

The psychological changes which ac- company long-term crisis were compared to those which accompany short-term stress. Levels of cri- sis, anxiety and depression were analyzed for pa- tients who underwent surgery for cancer (long- term crisis group) and for patients who underwent surgery for serious, but remediable problems. Results suggest that long-term crisis is qualitatively different from short-term stress. In particular, crisis is characterized by sudden, discontinuous changes in psychological functioning, while short- term stress is not characterized by such changes.
