Abstract

In Case-Based Design (CBD) systems, pattern matching is a key process in case retrieval. Specifically, in the domain of spatial layout design, whilst symbolic pattern matching approaches have been widely used, the use of other pattern matching approaches including topological pattern matching and image-based matching has also begun to emerge. In this paper, three pattern matching approaches for layout case retrieval are presented. These three approaches are: topological pattern matching, geometric shape matching, and combined topological pattern and geometric shape matching. Some experimental results of implementing the approaches within a computer system to solve layout matching problems are presented.
