Abstract

AbstractThis article describes the usage of the topological optimization in the process of designing a milling head. A modern milling head (innovative design with the beam structure) with an internal coolant supply was chosen. The useful properties of the head were increased with the help of topological optimization. The service life was not decreased and the weight changes are described in the paper. The head is manufactured using the additive technology DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering) from the steel MS1. The Siemens NX software and its features (Frustum topology solver and NX Nastran structural solver) were used for the simulation. The stiffness of several head designs was compared with the original solution in order to verify the results. Further research will be focused on actual testing of the optimized head.KeywordsTopological optimizationMilling headLoadingAdditive manufacturingFinite element method
