Abstract

Jutting out into the northern Atlantic Ocean, the southernmost tip of Greenland—known as Cape Farewell—is the windiest oceanic site in the world, with gale‐force winds whipping nearly a sixth of the time. The strong winds at Cape Farewell, called “tip jets,” blow from both the east and the west. Along with another set of anomalously strong winds that blow along the country's southeast coast, the powerful flows are thought to have a strong effect on sea ice behavior, coastal ocean circulation patterns, the melt rate of Greenland's coastal glaciers, and North Atlantic deep ocean convection.
