Abstract

This work focuses on the names of rural properties (toponyms) as utterances, in a Bakhtinian perspective and, for that, groups them in a discourse genre, that is, it considers them as relatively stable types of utterances, with theme, style and compositional structure similar. It also lists concepts by Maingueneau (2001) about speech and speech genres that seem to be in line with Bakhtin's thoughts (1999; 2003). Finally, it shows that toponyms imply numerous meanings, in addition to reflecting the dominant ideology in Brazil today.
