Abstract

When an infant presents with cyanosis which is not associated with respiratory distress methemoglobinemia should always be suspected Most of the acquired methemoglobinemia cases are due to local anesthetics in clinical practice and the methemoglobinemia level can be potentially harmful Here we report a 36 day old infant with 54 of methemoglobin level after the use of a local anesthetic agent for circumcision Clinicians and parents must be aware that a topical anesthetic cream has this potential adverse effect More studies are needed before routine use of topical anesthetic cream Key words: infant methemoglobinemia topical anesthesia
