Abstract

Meaningful use is promoting rapid spread and implementation of the electronic health record in hospital systems and practices of eligible providers. Meaningful use criteria are directed at supporting policy priorities for health outcomes. The staged timeline began in 2010 and extends to 2021 with final incentive payments. Specific objectives and clinical quality measures must be met in order for hospitals or providers to be eligible for the incentives. Neonatologists can benefit from understanding meaningful use and advocating for systems and measures that meet the workflow and clinical needs of the neonatal care providers and patients.
