Abstract

It is nearly thirty years since Yang and Mills invented non-Abelian gauge theory. We have come a long way since then. Today, all of the elementary particle interactions (strong, weak, and electromagnetic) are expressed in terms of such quantum field theories. The conjunction of electroweak SU(2)×U(1) and color SU(3) acting upon the new periodic table of quarks and leptons comprises what is known as the standard theory. In terms of a certain number of numerical parameters (E.g., the Cabibbo angle, the fine-structure constant, the tau-electron mass ratio), the standard theory offers a complete and correct description of all known elementary particle phenomena. What were the relevant problems of particle physics when I was a graduate student have, in large measure, been solved.
