Abstract

Creating a positive atmosphere When planning to lead an intervention group it is essential that you remember that fun should be at the heart of every session. If children feel safe to try, have a go, take risks and possibly get things wrong, they are far more likely to be active participants in their learning. Rewards such as stickers and lots of praise can maintain a positive atmosphere, while carefully planned activities matching the level of the children can build confidence and self-esteem. With these aspects in place, knowledge, skills and understanding will follow. The naturally repetitive style of intervention programmes can also help children to feel secure. They become accustomed to the patterns of delivery, the repetitive nature of the tasks and often enjoy the reliability of having an idea of what will be coming next.
