Abstract
Popular children's books not only have a story to tell about a particular cast of characters;they can also reveal much about the assumptions and values underpinning cultural expressions of social reality. In this essay, Nicholas C. Burbules offers a provocative interpretation of Tootle, a well-known children's tale, that demonstrates how ideology can inform a seemingly innocent account of schooling, work, and adulthood in modern society.
