This neck measurement is valuable because occlusal wear is frequently severe in these teeth, with loss of crown substance. In measuring the mesiodistal dimension of tooth crowns some workers have recorded the maximum mesiodistal diameter, while others have preferred to measure the diameter between adjacent contact points.
