Abstract

Tool wear is an important criterion which plays a significant role in the machining process. Rejection of the components due to poor surface finish and incorrect dimensions always causes considerable losses to the manufacturer. Tool wear primarily arises due to the machining that is carried out in abnormal conditions and the flow of chip over the rake face. This research mainly focused on the tool wear, surface finish and dimensional accuracy of the components manufactured by micro-textured and non-textured carbide inserts. Micro-textures of the chevron pattern and the cross-chevron patterns was fabricated on the rake face of the insert using Nd-YAG laser texturing machine. Results showed that the cross-chevron texture insert outperforms the chevron and the non-textured inserts in all the considered categories.
