Abstract

The objective of this article is to understand how the novel Tonio Kroger by Thomas Mann tries to represent the crisis of the traditional german bourgeoisie and, consequently, the humanistic values that the author ascribes to it. In order to do so, we will start with some general remarks proposed by some scholars about this social class, to later understand the specificities that it possess in the german context. After that, we will use Friedrich Schiller definitions in order to better characterize the novel’s protagonist, an artist, as a sentimental bourgeois, opposing him to the naive that he declares his love to.
