Abstract

Tonic accommodation is known to be different in different refractive gr Myopes show a lower degree of tonic accommodation than do hyperopes and eminetrof is not known is whether the lower tonic accommodation in emrnetrope,s predisposes the i’D myopia. In this study, we initially measured the refraction and tonic accommodation of 210 children, aged 6 to 16 years. We identified the emmetropic children and refracted them again 2 years later. We found that myopic children had lower tonic accommodation than emmetropic and hyperopic children. For the emmetropic children, there was no clear relationship between tonic accommodation and subsequent refractive change 2 years later. We conclude that the level of tonic accommodation does not predict refractive change in the short term.
