Abstract

In this chapter, LIÚ Xīnzhōng examines the tone system of present day Mùlěi Lányín Mandarin in Xinjiang as represented in the speech of one middle-aged male speaker who provided recordings of 3,595 monosyllabic words. Based on an analysis of the database with pitch features of syllabic-tone contours in Mùlěi, the present study considers the terminology to characterize the three-tone system and discusses the acoustic features and tonal correspondences between Mùlěi Mandarin and Mediaeval, or Common Dialectal Chinese tone categories. In light of our analysis of the tone system represented by this speaker, we argue for categorizing the Mùlěi tones into the three categories of píng, shǎng, and qù.
