Abstract

ABSTRACT This article focuses on Dana Vespoli’s representation of consent in porn, and especially on the mise-en-scène of the relationship between pleasure and agreement in her 2019 Evil Angel work entitled Consent. I suggest that Vespoli’s work is centred in normalizing female sexuality and desires – that no subject matter is too obscene to be depicted and that, while she may not identify as a ‘feminist pornographer’, Vespoli's work addresses themes of desire, agency, power, beauty, and pleasure within the confines of gender hierarchy and heteronormativity. In Consent, those issues are explored and challenge the traditional idea of female passivity as well as the seemingly mainstream and feminist ideal of female sexuality as necessarily linked to intimate relationships and affection.
