Abstract

Porcine serum or 5% dextrose in physiological saline was injected at different levels by the intraperitoneal route into normal neonatal piglets. Since tolerance to commercial anti-erysipelas serum was very restricted, serum from slaughter pigs was sterilized with 99% beta-propiolactone (BPL). This serum was tolerated at least as well as the dextrose-saline mixture. No mortality occurred when piglets were injected with either the dextrose-saline or the BPL-sterilized porcine serum at 8% of their body weight administered in equally divided doses 8 h apart and repeated 24 h later.
