Abstract

1. Brown trout from Galloway in southwest Scotland, an area of naturally occurring acid low-calcium water, show greater tolerance of low pH than hatchery-reared fish from a neutral area. 2. Both strains of Salmo trutta show the ability to recover chloride influx after a 2 hr episode of low pH. 3. Acclimation to low pH conditions probably occurs, but only over several generations of fish.
