Abstract

In this study; use of method for dangerous road section determination was investigated. In this method, instead of using the accident number or accident ratio, a relationship between the environmental properties of the road and accident proneness of the road was established, by using past accident data. This relation can also be used for accident proneness of the sections which are on the same road and exposed to similar traffic effects but have no past accident data. Moreover, possible remedies and their effects can be guessed by trying different variable values. Developed method was tested on Tokat-Niksar (D850) State Highway. Seven variables related to road and its environment was used. 66 out of 94 sections (70,21%) were defined as accident prone, whereas 174 out of 206 accidents (84,46%) were recorded in these sections. That is, great percentage of the accidents were captured in a relatively low percent of sections. It is concluded that developed method may be used in accident prone road section determination studies. Keywords: Accident prone road sections, Frequency Ratio Method, road safety
