Abstract

The international project office for the Tropical Ocean and Global Atmosphere (TOGA) program—a 10‐year international study on how atmospheric and oceanographic changes in the tropics affect climate patterns worldwide—has been established at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Environmental Research Laboratories in Boulder, Colo. Rex J. Fleming of NOAA will head this office.Scientists from as many as 36 nations are expected to take part in the TOGA program, which will be responsible for assembling the instrumentation system for monitoring tropical ocean atmospheric and oceanic conditions. Data will be gathered from ocean buoys, satellites, research ships, balloons, and other platforms to support the research.
