Abstract

688 inhabitants died between 1967 – 1981 in a Swiss community with an asbestos industry. Pleural mesotheliomas were found in 5 out of the 69 males with occupational asbestos exposure, but none in the remaining 330 male and 289 female deaths. Compared to the remaining males, an excess of lung carcinomas was found amongst the asbestos workers (Mante1-Haenszel-statistic, controlling for age: 3.49**).
