La democracia en América, de Alexis de Toqueville, ha sido una de las obras clave para entender el liberalismo. En este artículo se analizan cuáles fueron las ideas principales de este texto, así como la influencia que tuvo en los pensadores liberales y algunos conservadores mexicanos anteriores a la época de la Reforma, tales como Leonardo de Zavala, José María, Luis Mora, Mariano Otero y Lucas Alamán.
