Abstract

Abstract We studied the Q-switch of a pulsed Nd : YAG laser using the phase conjugation properties at backward scattering in a stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) cell inside the laser cavity. With acetone as the SBS liquid we studied loss modulations by a switching mechanism from an unstable operation at low intensities to a stable one at higher intensities. This Q-switch results in the existence of a focal point outside the cavity. We found different temporal behaviour of the ns pulses in that focal point and outside. Depending on the experimental conditions one, two or three pulses of 3 ns duration separated by the round trip time were generated.
