Abstract

Along with Murray Gell-Mann, Yuval Ne'eman is responsible for one of the watersheds of particle physics: the idea that matter is composed of elementary quarks. In 1961 their “eightfold way” model of hadrons, the building blocks of the atomic nucleus, led to the quark model. Modern experiments have now triumphantly confirmed the existence of quarks and the ideas of underlying symmetry on which the eightfold way was built.
